Frederick Douglass-My Bondage and My Freedom

Frederick Douglass is a pioneer for civil rights. He believed “knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom,” and this belief compelled Douglass to learn to read and write. Considering this thought, if ever we choose to reject opportunities to contemplate and learn new ideas and gain new knowledge, then do we fall victim to a sort of self inflicted enslavement? Doesn't Douglass point to the overwhelming importance of learning?

Furthermore, although not all learning and education takes place within the walls of the school house, it is a place centered on learning. My charge to you is to not waste opportunities you have to learn, especially at school. You are afforded a free education, unlike Douglass, who had to secretly educate himself amidst fear of punishment. Challenge yourself everyday to gain new knowledge or reinforce or rethink knowledge you already possess.

Comment on my thoughts. In your comments, reveal why you think education and gaining knowledge is important to you.

  1. I think it is important for peole to get an education and to take many opportunities because it could all come in handy some day. i dont think you should focus your life on education though because there are more important things in life and greater goals to reach.

  2. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.. That slogan seems to fit surprisingly well in this context. Education is immeasurably important. The only way the human race can avoid repeating the mistakes of the past is by teaching future generations of those mistakes and their impacts.

Also, mind if I post the link to my blog here? My internet is being stupid and I can't follow you right now.

  3. I feel that without knowledge we would be unable to uphold our civil and personal duty to control our futures. If you lose this ability you are in-slaved in a way by your superior peers. It just seems with even a small amount of knowledge any human being would want to have his or her highest rank in any society, so with knowing this it makes me and more than likely anyone want to uphold there greatest knowledge!!!!!!!!

  4. With knowledge, comes freedom. The more knowledge you gain, the more opportunity to achieve greater goals. Therefore, education is the basis for everything and it is extremely necessary!

  6. I think that if you do focus your life around education then you will be more successful in your life. Without an education, you really don't have a bright future.

  7. My education is important to me because it is a thin line between living the life I want to live or living a life I don't want to live. Without an education I would not be able to go to college and pursue my dreams.

  8. When I was young I remember my dad telling me that old saying "knowledge is power". I am a firm beleiver in that. Theres alot of things you can lose in life; possetions, money, athletic ability, but one thing that can never be taking away from you is your knowledge. Your mind is an all powerful weapon, and the more you feed it the more powerful it becomes.

  9. Its amazing how this Frederick Douglas guy has done with the little basics skills of reading and writing. he went from having talent as big as a grain of sand to creating and laying the foundation for every activist to build off of and make their case for the unfair treatment humanity has brought upon and almost anniliated itself over and over again.

Its true knowledge is power without it everything is lost thats why they say those who dont know history are doomed to repeat it and which in translation it can relate to the circumstances you and your parents discuss and go through. FOr instance when your parents tell you about their mistakes in their life, they help you aviod making the same mistakes they have. Knowledge provides the principles and basis for everything else that dwells in your life now or yet to come.

So education is the greatest gift this world can give you, schools give you an ell, take a light year. As long as you make the most of every little opportunity that your high school life gives you then your life will only be that much easier.

like my dad always said work harder now instead of having to work harder later!

  10. I can completely agree that education is the most important thing, although nonserious thing to students. Many kids at high school dont take advantage of the oppertunity to learn. The reason i believe this is so is because it is forced on students and drilled into there head that school is everything! Giving the mind set of "i dont need it" and "who cares". If you look at the chinese population it is a ultimate honor to make it to high school. and for the U.S. a complete dread to the general student body because it involves more schooling. Its like writing a paper you would prefer to write on a topic you like compared to being forced to write on a specific topic. if someone tells you write about the 16th president of the U.S. unless the individual has an inspiration on history they will most likely not apply themselves in the writing just because it is forced and not of interest. so in conclusion education is the most important for people to succeed in life but is not taken seriously from most

Education opens doors of brilliant career opportunities. It helps to gain more choices in careers and our own growth.

  13. education is important because without it the world could not go round. We need education to talk, function, get jobs, and live. Without education we wouldnt have medical care, teachers, or any other profession we need to live. People of the United States would be considered "ignorant" because most of the world comes to us when we have problems. Political leaders wouldnt know how to run a state or a country without the proper education. I cant even imagine what the US would be without people knowing how to do their jobs. Everyone needs some form of education to survive!
